TRANSPORT
How to get around Sri Lanka by
Train: Trains run all over Sri Lanka, this is by far the best type of transport and the cheapest when travelling to an from destinations. A 7 hour train costs $2AUd-$3AUD You can also choose First Class etc.. Seats are quite uncomfortable
Bus: Buses are also everywhere in Sri Lanka , but keep in mind they get very full with locals and tourists, if you can go to the bus stop that is the beginning of the journey to try and get a seat, you could be standing the whole 1-2 hours. Buses are best to travel on around the coast, we travelled by bus from Hikkaduwa to hiriketiya ( and all in between, fares costing $0.80c)
Tuk Tuk : When you are in one city, town or place, and you don't want to walk or ride your bikes or scooters, get the tuk tuks!
Taxi : We used a Taxi to get from the Aiport down to Hikkaduwa. We didn't want to stuff around on getting a bus then a train or having a change over and going through 100 stops. We had luggage and wanted a comfy ride. You can book Uber, or use Pickme or Kangaroo for the same service as Uber. Or get a taxi from a legit counter at the airport , and when in other towns just .....
Scooter: Hire scooters for as little as $10aud a day. In main tourist town you can hire them from your hostel or hotel or find a shop that says "Bikes for rent" "Motorbikes for rent". You will hand over your passport and sometimes they'll ask for a deposit ( usually through hotel they won't ask for cash) You need an international licence to drive the scooters, there are check points all around the country (if you don't have a licence police can fine you, corrupt police will make you pay cash) We traveled and have had lots of friends travel without licences the entire trip. The bike papers of the bike being owned should always sit under the seat incase police pull you over. Get travel insurance as accidents on the bike can cost uo to and more then $800 in damage.
Hire Car: Can be fun and convenient way to travel around the country with all your belongings, a comfortable ride, quicker then public transport etc . Companies and prices
