How to get from Bangkok to Vientiane
We took the night train from Bangkok Hualamphong Railway Station at 8pm to Nong Kai (it leaves other times like 6:35pm ect and maybe 2pm)
It costed 688BHT ($27.50AUD) for a A/C, sleeper bed. We bought our tickets at the train station, very close to China Town, Yaowarat, just walk. The train was awesome, so comfortable to lay completely flat, with a window to watch the sunrise (bottom bed) You can choose Sleeper/fan for around 450bht or Seat/recliner/A/C VIP for 580. Book earlier if around the weekend, we had to wait 2 days because Sunday and Monday was fully booked.
Train ended in Nong Kai. Take a Tuk Tuk for 20-30Dong (.80c-$1.20c) from Nong Kai train station toThailand exit boarder, leave Thailand, no fees.
Hop on a bus for 25Dong that takes you to Laos Immigration entrance boarder. Here you will need to get a Laos visa with USD for Australians it is 30USD for 30days. No 15days free! Only for Sweden & a couple of other countries.
Once in Laos, get a Mini van for 500BHT, we split it between 7 people (70Baht each) $2.75cAUD each.
TOTAL PRICE FROM BANGKOK TO VIENTIANE = $32AUD + $30USD Tourist Visa....
Be careful of the Travel Companies in Bangkok. They charge 1,400 or 1,200 ($53AUD) for the Over night sleeper bus from bangkok to Vietntiane, and we did it all for $32. They will lie and say its more expensive to take the train ect, but it is VERY easy with Tuk tuks waiting for you and mini vans all there ready to take you to each step.

The smallest and quietest capital city I’ve ever been to in my life
You could easily skip this town
Not much to do or see here besides the Buddha Park and the Night markets along the river
Developed town to other quite towns, but not trendy or modern, and no atmosphere or vibe
People stop here for 1-2 nights after partying in Vang Vieng
The mekong river runs through this very small town
The .. Brother hostel has a pool to cool down in the days heat
You can easily walk around this town besides the buddha park you'll need to take the bus
Even mix of tourists and locals here, a lot of locals living here in their capital city

One of my favourite places in Laos and South East Asia
Driving in was lush and green, mountains, small modest rice fields , rushing river nice colours, and MOUNTAINS driving up down and around the mountains, I loved the scenery here and landscapes!
Go for scooter or bike rides around the country side, ride over bamboo foot bridges and rivers, and visit caves and swimming holes.
Weather is beautiful in the day nice and hot, not too humid at night
Modern and trendy with vibe and atmosphere here with mountain view backdrop restaurants and fun loud bars with new hostels and young crowds
Lots of tour agents with tour information for around VV
Laos don't use there horn as much only when needed
Vang Viengs' sandwich game is strong, you’ll find yourself eating them for breakfast lunch and dinner at only 10kip
Be careful tubing and the usage of drugs here, its dangerous with loads of fatal injuries, but also the fines and consequences of smoking a joint will leave you up to $600AUD fine pp and having to leave the country, over smoking a joint!
But get your head around this, at the rasta bar you can buy weed and smoke in there without getting in trouble….
